Last week, Philadelphia scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to earn a 37-27 victory over Washington. Among those leading the charge for the Eagles was quarterback Carson Wentz. Philadelphia’s signal caller completed 30-of-43 pass attempts for 266 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Miles Sanders also had a big day against the Redskins, rushing for 122 yards on 19 carries and scoring two total touchdowns. It was the first time Sanders has eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in his career.

Meanwhile, everything went Dallas’ way against the Rams last week as the Cowboys made off with a 44-21 win. Running back’s Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard were among the main playmakers for Dallas as the former rushed for two touchdowns and 117 yards on 24 carries and the latter rushed for 131 yards and a score. In Dallas’ 37-10 victory over the Eagles earlier this season, Elliott carried the ball 22 times for 111 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Dak Prescott also put on a show in his first meeting against the Eagles, throwing for 239 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 30 yards and a score.

Congratulations, you made it to Dallas Week with a reason to care. It wasn’t always easy, and there were an equal number of opportunities to despair along the way as there were to keep hope alive.

The same can be said in Texas, of course, and that is the bottom line for Sunday’s Clash of the Mediocres between 7-7 teams that picked the right season to be members of the NFC East.

The good news for Eagles fans is the game is a lock for the home team. They will definitely beat the Cowboys, hold serve against the Giants, and represent the division proudly with a home game in the wild-card round of the playoffs. I think it will be against San Francisco, a team that is leaking oil slightly after blowing a nine-point, fourth-quarter lead at home against the Falcons, but that’s getting a little ahead of ourselves.

Unfortunately, there is bad news, too. In keeping with the nature of the teams and the game itself, there is also no chance the Eagles will win against the Cowboys, a team that already beat them by 27 points this season. Sorry about that. When you dance on the edge of the cliff against the Giants and Redskins, a misstep against a better team is unavoidable.

So which is it? Let’s find out.

SURE THING #1: This is the time of year for Eagles magic. The previous two seasons should have made that eminently clear, as should the dramatic comebacks in the previous two weeks.

The Eagles needed to complete the job of the 2017 season without their franchise quarterback, and needed to do it again last season in the final three games to make the playoffs. This time around, they have their guy behind center and he is on a hot streak.

Surviving adversity before has given this team an indefinable something that isn’t measured with statistics. It has a heart that can’t be denied and a togetherness that will carry the team past the gutless Cowboys and their soon-to-be-fired head coach.

NO WAY #1: Ah, yes, “magic,” the final refuge of the truly delusional. How did that go in New Orleans in the playoffs?

NFL games are not decided by magic. They are usually won by the team with enough talent to make itself a bad matchup for the opponent. The Cowboys are a bad matchup for the Eagles.

Six of the seven Eagles losses have come against teams with passing offenses ranked among the top 12 in the league. (Miami was the exception.) For all the talk of finally getting healthy in the defensive backfield, the truth is that the Eagles aren’t very good there even when healthy.

The defensive line hasn’t brought enough consistent pressure to help out, and Jim Schwartz has been reduced to blitzing more than he would like. Against the No. 2 passing offense in the league, and against a starting quarterback who has been sacked the fewest times this season, this matchup will decide the game.

SURE THING #2: Dallas is a fraud. The Cowboys have won exactly one game against a team that currently has a winning record, and that was Sunday’s win against the 8-6 Rams. Faced with a decent opponent, Dallas folds.

The Cowboys lost this season to the Bills, Packers and Bears, all pretty good teams, and all teams that the Eagles beat. Admittedly, Dallas usually did better against the low-hanging fruit than the Eagles, but the Cowboys haven’t gained enough confidence to survive a real test. The Eagles went to Buffalo and won. They went to Green Bay and won. They know what that feels like.

The first game between the teams was a turnover fluke. The Cowboys got two early touchdowns because of fumbles by Dallas Goedert and Carson Wentz, and the snowball rolled downfield, culminating in another touchdown after another Wentz fumble. It was a bad game for the Eagles, but it wasn’t a measure of the two teams. On an even playing field, particularly in Philadelphia, that won’t happen again.

NO WAY #2: First of all, a Carson Wentz fumble isn’t a fluke. What were once vices are now habits, to quote noted football experts The Doobie Brothers. With his three fumbles against the Redskins, Wentz now has 46 in 54 career games, the most of any player since he joined the league in 2016. The Eagles are a minus-6 in turnovers this season. Wentz has lost seven fumbles. Do the math.

Don’t discount Sunday’s beatdown of the Rams. That was a statement game, and it sends the Cowboys into Philadelphia on a confident high.

SURE THING #3: If you’re looking for a statement, look no further than Wentz this Sunday. This game is the stage he has been waiting for. Bad luck has kept him from the postseason so far, but he’s going to make his own luck against the Cowboys.

The two fourth-quarter comebacks are just the beginning of his statement. He knows people question what the Eagles did to move up and draft him as the franchise quarterback of the future, and certainly question the enormous contract extension he received before this season. He knows he is doubted, and there is a fire that burns within that semi-goofy North Dakota exterior that is about to burst forth.

He’s getting it done this season with backups, rookies and practice-squad players. Make no mistake about it. To finish off this season at home, in front of a crowd that will witness his greatest moment, by beating the team’s most hated rival, is the story he is meant to write.

NO WAY #3: Let’s start with the Linc. The Eagles have hosted six regular-season games in the past three seasons against teams that finished 2017 or 2018 with a winning record or, in the case of this year’s schedule, currently have one. They are 2-4 in those games, so leave aside the big, bad home-field advantage angle. (That’s not including a loss to Dallas when the Eagles rested everyone at the end of 2017.)

As for Wentz, one guy’s motivation is another guy’s suffocating pressure. So, yes, we’ll see how he does. The flip side of the coin is Dak Prescott and the ultimate referendum on how each team approached that 2016 draft.

The Cowboys needed a quarterback, too, but stayed put with the No. 4 pick and took Ezekiel Elliott. Worked out pretty well. Much later, with the 135th pick in the supplemental portion of the fourth round, they grabbed Prescott. Also worked out.

Think Prescott reflects on how that draft went, and how much he savors playing against the guy taken 133 picks ahead of him? Prescott is 4-1 career vs. the Eagles (not counting a Cowboys lie-down in 2016 or the previously mentioned 2017 finale) and has won three straight. He has a story to write, too.

CONCLUSION: Yes, there will be a conclusion, and it will arrive at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday. It should be worth waiting for, although we already know with certainty that the Eagles can’t lose. Unless, of course, they can’t win.

It’s been that kind of season.

Eagles vs. Cowboys Game Preview: Five questions and answers with a division enemy

The Philadelphia Eagles (7-7) and Dallas Cowboys (7-7) are set to play at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday afternoon. In order to preview this Week 16 matchup that has major NFC East implications, I reached out to our enemies over at Blogging The Boys. The diplomatic Dave Halprin kindly took the time to answer my questions about the upcoming contest. Let’s take a look at the answers. You can check out my side of this Q&A exchange coming up at BTB on Friday.

1 — Do you believe the Cowboys are truly back on track after seeing them blow out the Rams? To what extent do concerns from the losing streak remain?

It would be foolish for any Cowboys fan to believe that the team is fully back on track. We’ve seen too many instances of the Cowboys playing well this season only to be followed by some really bad stretches of football. Having said that, the way they played against the Rams on Sunday does offer some hope that the team is waking up just in time to save the season. Most objective observers of the Cowboys this year would say they have a pretty talented roster but that they continually beat themselves with terrible mistakes like penalties, turnovers, undisciplined play, shoddy tackling and some of the worst special teams I’ve ever seen. The Cowboys do a lot of damage to themselves, but when they don’t do that they can play some nice football like they did against the Rams. The problem is that was just one week and we haven’t seen them sustain any stretch of quality play since the first part of the season. So yes, concerns absolutely remain and while I’m hopeful they are back on track, they could just as easily head up to Philadelphia and lay a big fat egg. I don’t trust them, but I at least have a little hope whereas before the Rams game I was pretty despondent.

2 — Is this game kind of a win-win for Cowboys fans in that either Dallas clinches the NFC East or Jason Garrett’s fate is sealed? Speaking of, who do you think is coaching the team in 2020?

I guess some fans see it that way and I can’t blame them, but I never want the Cowboys to blow an opportunity to make the playoffs. Once a team gets in the playoffs anything can happen so I can’t consider a loss on Sunday a “win” That’s not to say that I don’t get what you are saying, and yes, I don’t want Garrett coaching next season either. But I tend to be an optimist, so as long as the Cowboys are in the hunt, whether to make the playoffs or in the playoffs, I am always rooting for victory and want to take my chances. Also, unless Garrett can make some kind of miracle run to the Super Bowl, I don’t think he can save his job. So whether we lose this week, or sometime early in the playoffs, the results are going to be the same for Garrett. So I say let’s play it out and if we don’t get to the Super Bowl, then Garrett is gone. If we do get to the Super Bowl, then I’m willing to accept whatever happens after that.

As for who is coaching next year, I don’t think there is really anyway to know. With Jerry Jones, who knows what direction he’s going to take. I think he would take a run at Sean Payton even though it’s not going to happen but Jerry’s ego would probably require him to try. Lincoln Riley has been a name bandied about for a couple of years and Urban Meyer’s name has popped up recently, although it’s hard to tell if there is something there or just self-promotion from Meyer. Then you hear names like Josh McDaniels or a variety of current NFL assistants. I don’t know why, but Lincoln Riley is the guy I think Jones would really pursue, I think there has been a fascination with him for a couple of seasons.

3 — If you were building a game plan for the Cowboys, how would you attack them on both offense and defense?

To attack their offense, I would play the run and keep everything in front of me in the secondary. I absolutely would do everything I could to keep Ezekiel Elliott and the Cowboys run game from going off. When the Cowboys get that part of the offense rolling, they are very difficult to stop. So that means stay disciplined with the front seven and make sure to stay in your gaps. Don’t freelance and make them work for every yard. Also, don’t give up the intermediate/long pass. Make the Cowboys work their way down field with short passes because they are bound to make a mistake along the way. A penalty, a dropped pass, a turnover or something will go wrong. The Cowboys shoot themselves in the foot often, so give them plenty of chances to do that.

Attacking their defense should involve screens, and inside runs that use trap blocks or counters or any type of slight misdirection. The Cowboys can be very undisciplined on defense and will over-pursue, lose contain and all kinds of things because they are over aggressive. Take advantage of that and also use some designed QB runs on zone-reads or QB draws because that has killed this defense all year. In the passing game, use screens and rub routes and use your double-headed tight ends to bedevil the Cowboys linebackers and safeties. The Cowboys are pretty good about protecting deep, but they will give up the underneath stuff and they can be poor tacklers.

4 — What’s one thing that makes you feel really confident about the Cowboys in this matchup? How about one thing that worries you the most?

I guess there isn’t really just one thing that makes me feel confident. There are a few things that give me hope, like the fact that over the last few years the Cowboys seem to have the Eagles’ number. I know each game is different, but the fact that the Cowboys have been successful in recent history is comforting. Also, the Eagles injury situation is obviously an issue for your side. This would be a different game if you had all your pieces. The last thing would be the Rams game. If we can block and tackle like that, I like our chances.

What worries me the most is the Cowboys tendency to implode this year. You just never know when they are going to come out and play awful. There is no trust with this team, so every game is a worry.

5 — Who wins this game and why? Score prediction? And what are your expectations for the rest of this Cowboys season?

I think the Cowboys will win but I also think it’s going to be a close game. You guys have a couple of units that are really problematic, your secondary is vulnerable and you’ve lost your playmakers at receiver without strong replacements. Then the Lane Johnson thing, the Jordan Howard thing, you got a lot of good players who won’t go or who might go but will be battling injury. That’s a lot to overcome. If the Cowboys have truly found themselves after wandering in the desert for three games, I think they will have enough to win on the road. I’ll go with a Cowboys win 27-24. I truly don’t have any expectation for the rest of the season because of how unpredictable the Cowboys have been. One week they can look like they belong among the top NFC teams, the next week they are dumping a game to the Jets. It’s just impossible to know which team will show up.

This year’s Mubadala World Tennis Championship will be held a week earlier than usual, organisers have announced.

The 2019 MWTC will take place over the weekend of December 19-21, Flash Entertainment said Wednesday, at its traditional home at Abu Dhabi’s International Tennis Centre at Zayed Sports City.

The tournament’s new dates are expected to increase the number of fans attending the exhibition event ahead of the Christmas period with eight of the world’s leading players – six men and two women – in action in the captial.

“The Mubadala World Tennis Championship has always been a huge hit with people from across the globe, offering intimate and unrivalled access to the world’s best players in a special, festival atmosphere. We are constantly looking to evolve the event and the new dates will enhance the senses of visitors and further cement Abu Dhabi’s reputation as the perfect winter holiday destination,” said John Lickrish, chief executive at Flash Entertainment.

The MWTC has often been used by the world’s leading players as a tune-up event before heading into the first grand slam of the season, the Australian Open, every January.

The 2018 MWTC field boasted a world-class field including world No 1 and 15-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic as well as 18-time major winner Rafael Nadal. Djokovic beat big-serving South African Kevin Anderson 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the men’s final to lift his fourth title in Abu Dhabi.

The 2020 tennis season is set to start with a bang as the world’s top two players Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are joined by Daniil Medvedev, Maria Sharapova, Amanda Anisimova and more yet-to-be-announced stars.

Nadal and Djokovic are both four-time champions at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, with the Serbian returning as the defending champion after beating Kevin Anderson in last season’s final.

Djokovic went on to beat Nadal to capture the Australian Open title in January, but the Spaniard bounced back superbly and put together an extremely strong back-half of the year, winning two more Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and the U.S. Open, along with ending 2019 as the new World No. 1, leapfrogging Djokovic in November.

With Djokovic winning the Wimbledon title, all four major crowns were shared between the pair in 2019 – can they maintain their dominance as a new decade of tennis launches in Abu Dhabi?

Daniil Medvedev is one man leading the charge to dethrone the ‘Big Three’. The Russian was absolutely outstanding in 2019, rising to a career-high No. 4 in the world and putting together an incredible streak of reaching six consecutive finals from July to October, winning Masters 1000 titles in Cincinnati and Shanghai, along with making a first Grand Slam final at the U.S. Open, where he went down in a five-set epic to Nadal.

Medvedev ended up losing his last four matches of 2019 in Paris and London as a long season caught up with him – can he launch his 2020 campaign on the best possible note by taking the scalps of either Nadal or Djokovic?

More ATP players are set to be announced in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Sharapova and Anisimova will battle it out for the women’s championship, with the winner to join Jelena Ostapenko (2017) and Venus Williams (2018) as champions.

First played in 2009, the Mubadala World Tennis Championship is an exhibition event and a popular stop for the top players. The six-man field round-robin format guarantees every participant will play three matches against top-quality opposition in the luxurious surroundings of Abu Dhabi and a more relaxed context than the typical tournament format, meaning that players can tune up their games and warm up their competitive muscles after the off-season break before playing their first ATP World Tour tournaments of the season – which, from 2020, is the new ATP Cup in Australia.

Nadal won back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011, defeating big-hitting Swede Robin Soderling and legendary rival Roger Federer respectively, but Djokovic monopolized the tournament thereafter. The multiple Grand Slam champion from Serbia defeated David Ferrer in the 2012 final, inaugurating a three-year reign in Abu Dhabi which saw him defeat Nicolas Almagro in 2013 and David Ferrer in 2014.

Djokovic’s reign was ended in 2015, however, when the world no. 1 – suffering from illness – was forced to withdraw before the final, giving a walkover to Andy Murray who claimed his second Mubadala World Tennis Championships title. Nadal returned earlier in January 2016 to capture his third Mubadala World Tennis Championship crown when he conquered Milos Raonic, while the Spaniard successfully defended his title with a 6-4 7-6(5) victory over David Goffin in December 2016.

Kevin Anderson became the first non-big four winner of the tournament in 2017, while Djokovic restored parity in 2018, defeating the South African in three sets in the final.
